Constraints on the Radial Mass Distribution of Dark Matter Halos from Rotation Curves

چکیده

Rotation curves place important constraints on the radial mass distribution of dark matter halos, ρ(r). At large radii, rotation curves tend to become asymptotically flat. For ρ(r) ∝ r, this implies α ≈ −2, which persists as far out as can be measured. At small radii, the data strongly prefer dark matter halos with constant density cores (α ≈ 0) over the cuspy halos (α ≤ −1) predicted by cosmological simulations. As better data have been obtained, this cusp-core problem has become more severe.

Constraints on the Structure of Dark Matter Halos from the Rotation Curves of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We re-examine the disk-halo decompositions of the rotation curves of low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies with Vmax ≥ 80 km s −1, taking full account of the effects of beam smearing. We show that the rotation curves of these LSB galaxies are, contrary to previous claims, consistent with dark halos with steep central cusps in their density distribution. In fact, the spatial resolution of the da...

The Cores of Dark Matter Dominated Galaxies: Theory vs. Observations

We use the rotation curves of a sample of dark matter dominated dwarf and low-surface brightness (LSB) late-type galaxies to study their radial mass distributions. We find that the shape of the rotation curves is remarkably similar for all (both dwarf and LSB) galaxies in the sample, suggesting a self-similar density distribution of their dark matter (DM) halos. This shape can be reproduced wel...

Dwarf Galaxy Rotation Curves and the Core Problem of Dark Matter Halos

The standard cold dark matter (CDM) model has recently been challenged by the claim that dwarf galaxies have dark matter halos with constant density cores, whereas CDM predicts halos with steeply cusped density distributions. Consequently, numerous alternative dark matter candidates have recently been proposed. In this paper, we scrutinize the observational evidence for the incongruity between ...

The Mass Distribution in Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

The distribution of the stellar and gaseous components in low surface brightness galaxies has been determined directly from optical and HI imaging. The distribution of what might be the dominant mass component, the dark matter, which is inferred from rotation curves, is far harder to determine. Although the rotation curves themselves can be determined fairly accurately from HI synthesis observa...
